Who Is Larry Ellison?
Larry Ellison is the founder of the software company Oracle Corporation (ORCL) which he formed in 1977. He served as the company’s chief executive officer until 2014 and still serves as chairman of the board and chief technology officer. His company successfully went public in 1986 but suffered from quality-control problems in 1988.
These issues led to cash flow problems, operating losses, a declining share price, and near bankruptcy a couple of years later. New top management worked with Ellison to turn these problems around by 1994.
Early life
Larry Ellison started his elementary school education at Eugene Field Elementary School in Chicago. After that, he joined the Sullivan High School in 1959. He was very intelligent but he never concentrated on subjects which were skilled at school. Later than completing his high school education, He joined the University of Illinois, but he did not present his final year exam because of the sudden death of his adoptive mother. After the summer holiday, He attended the University of Chicago, Where he showed his interest in computer design subject.
But He dropped out of college twice – first from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, then the University of Chicago – before moving to California and working odd jobs.
In his oral history, he recalled, “I never took a computer science class in my life. I got a job working as a programmer; I was largely self-taught. I just picked up a book and started programming.”
When he landed a programming job at Ampex Corporation, Business Insider’s Madeline Stone notes that one of Ellison’s responsibilities at the company was building a database for the CIA. In 1977, he and two coworkers left Ampex to start a database management company of their own.
And which they called Oracle—for the CIA. The company had fewer than 10 employees and revenue of less than $1 million per year, but in 1981, IBM signed on to use Oracle, and the company’s sales doubled every year for the next seven years. Ellison soon renamed the company after its best-selling product.
